what made you a coin collector...?

out of curiousity... whats your story??

The idea of following a suggestion that I use the old silver coins for my "wedding arras" (which I did not) because they are called Plata during the old days, but then I made sure that my first daughter and second daughter used them in their wedding. And now my eldest son soon to get married will use it (silver coins) also, plus I am now completing a set for my youngest son. As I try to gather the coins from relatives, friends, neighbors, office mates, and whoever.. other coins came by and caught my interest. Now it is more for fun and pastime.

for me, it's the history. always love history and coins are the closest things we could "touched" and "experience" our history to the different eras...

not coins exactly but banknotes. what inspired me exactly? the new generation series. it has it's flaws. yes. to other numismatists here, they may even look corny, but when i saw it on a blog before any of the new gen banknotes went out, i was blown away. when i got the new gen 100 pesos from a cab driver, i was like a ten-year old kid given a gameboy on christmas day (yep i'm that old. lol!). from there, it just blew up. in two months, after a visit to the BSP museum, i got the complete new gen series, new design series, english series, half of the victory series, and almost all of the JIM banknotes. now i'm broke. lol!

well here's is mine try to make this a short one, i was cleaning our house found this antique jar tucked away in a decaying cabinet it was almost full of this old coins never knew about them or its value then... but i knew it must worth something... i emptied the jar put the coins in a bag for "safekeeping" displayed the jar in plain view ... maybe some one in the family might know or notice it... months passed by no one seems to care about the jar or its contents.. then i was laid of from work... almost a hundred and thirty pesos in 10, 20, 50, and peso us-Philippine coins for only 400 per peso... 2 isabel 1p for 8k...

yes i am an idiot...

just recently learned about the year, mints, condition... i will never be an expert
but i realized it was a treasure not for its value but for its story... just last month my mom was asking about the jar and its contents... crying.. it was a family heirloom... it was a testament... it was a gift... of love (the isabel coins) till the end in his deathbed my lolo is whispering.. calling my lola's name again and again till the last breath... not soon enough my lola got hospitalized in need of a sum of money... she had that money in that jar... i learned from my mom back then my lola was offered 70k for the 2 isabel... but no it was a gift.... of love... a testament of it.. was a double idiocy for me..

i know my late grandparents are not happy...

a coin at a time ill get them but not all of them back.. i know i cant pay for all of it especially the isabel coins... but ill try...

no i cant bear to tell the truth about what really happened to the coins.... not now at the least not to my mother.. that i really cant but maybe someday with the coins i collected till that day, to my children ... my heirloom aNd a request ...

damn, bro. that's quite a story you got. i bet other numismatists here can help you out in finding at least those isable coins, man. good luck!

I've been collecting since grade school. I started with few old coins from my father, but, took it seriously just recently. My favorite coin is the one posted as my primary pic, fortunately landed in my hands as a change, mistaken for our current 25 cent coin in a jeepney. Its a 5 Centavo Coin English Series coin. I recently learn about things which made me more interested, also I found out that there's a lot of people who shares the same passion. That passion made me one..

how can be something so small worth that much?

yah thats why im here maybe someday if i can afford at least one.. maybe someone here can be of help...

i envy you guys who did... do... and will be collecting for the (right) passion... sad that i had the wrong start... sad that it was late for me to be educated in numismatics.. such a broad field...

not all treasure are tangible

In the collecting community, we call that as "tuition fee". Almost all of us have that kind of story.

one day, my boyfriend found some silver coins that were given to him by his father when he was still a small boy... then out of curiosity, i asked my mom if we had any coins... we do, but she is not giving them to me cause they were given to her by my father.... anyway, i told myself that i want to make sure that i have something to pass on to my grandchildren when the time comes... so that's what started my interest in collecting

My dad gave me part of his bank note collection.
It is just sitting there for years.

Then when BSP released the new gen series, I decided to continue the hobby.

Just last week I took old coins from my grandma's collection (glass jar) hehehe.
