I started collecting coins the same way most people do. Very happy when different years of coins came my way. Then when I attended coin auctions, I realized that there are beautiful coins out there. I researched coin conditions or local experts' estimate of coin grades. Now, I am trying to replace my coins with pretty Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) coins, Uncirculated (UNC) coins, Almost / About Uncirculated (AU) coins and Extra / Extremely Fine (EF) coins. I still have Very Fine (VF) and Fine (F) coins, and even some coins that are Fair to just Good. It will still take a long time to replace all my coins. However, I noticed that some coins are really prettier than others even if they are all BU classified coins. It seems that some coins were that well made (mint struck with all features visible like a proof coin). Now, I think why maybe the coin grading system affixes different numbers after its classification like MS.61, MS.64, MS.67, etc.. Can anybody clarify.. Thanks..

Great question Al!

The MS stands for Mint State, it is used to grade the mint condition of the coins.

MS-70 Perfect Mintstate (Theoretical perfection - and therefore not used)
MS-69 Superb Mintstate
MS-68 Superb Mintstate
MS-67 Superb Mintstate
MS-66 Gem Mintstate
MS-65 Gem Mintstate
MS-64 Very Choice Mintstate
MS-63 Choice Mintstate
MS-62 Select Mintstate
MS-61 Typical Mintstate
MS-60 Typical Mintstate (Uncirculated or Brilliant Uncirculated - Unc. or BU)

Hope this helps! ABE
