I just got an old coin. It is very ugly (dark and dirty looking) on one side but it looks Brilliant Uncirculated on the other side. It seems that the previous owner kept it in display for fifty years inside his home, thus the underside retained its luster. What can be done about this?

al, there is nothing that can be done about it as coins especially silver is highly reactive. especially if the coin is exposed to sunlight on a regular basis (perhaps thats what happened when it was on display inside his home)
i have the same thing that happened to one of my morgan dollars and another with my 1908 peso. one side is dark while the other side is completely brilliant uncirculated.

if you considered that coin is uncirculated. then the other side should be tone uncirculated. you should not clean it. it become a unique coin with one side unc and the other side toned. when it toned beautifully. it attached a huge premium on that coin. but on the other hand. one side is toned dark and ugly. still you have to leave it that way. simply DO NOT CLEAN.
