| Hi, anyone have some idea when we can see the new currency issued out? If I'll guess, it will most likely be middle 2010, but that's just a guess. Any inputs from other sources welcome. Thanks! | |

| I heard that that are considering the used of plastic instead of metals. That would really dismay many numismatists. | |

| The linked article and other media sources quoting the BSP recently say the first new notes will begin circulating in December. In order to observe this timetable, design and production must begin soon.
The intriguing question is what UNESCO World Heritage sites will be picked for the back of these notes? In general terms, that is the theme of the new notes - sites well known to Filipinos, and a drawing card for tourism. Here's the list of five recognized by the United Nations:
Baroque Churches of the Philippines (comprised of 4 churches) Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras Historic Town of Vigan Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park
A list of five sites, six demoninations. Hmmmm... I would suspect that one note will have a Moro or strong Mindanao theme. Kalookan

| I get last week my first 20 peso bill from my bank staff as a giveaway. Is there somebody who knows how many they produced in the year 2010?

| I also just got hold of the newly issued P20 money bills last week, just a few days before January 1, and I find it more colorful. It follows the trend in modern money issuance of European Countries which are very intricate and with lots of security features.. We can just wait for the official announcement from BSP on how many they printed for the Christmas rush. Remember that they promised to come out with new money bills before the year (2010) ended. Most of us got hold of the P20 issues, and the rest we do not know if they were able to circulate it (P50, P100, P200, P500 and P1000) on time. Unlike the coins which bear the year of mintage, I am not sure if the money bills will have identifying year of printing. | |

| Despite the relatively minor faults that the media have been attacking, these notes are a true work of art. The longer you look at the design, the more national symbols can be seen.
The BSP said that the higher denominations will be released gradually, so even if they initially bear a 2010 date, we may not see them entering circulation for awhile.

| I am not sure if the new money bills are considered as "Polymer". It is more like the old issues in appearance and the "feel" in handling (like it is still with "abaca" in the paper they had used before). Some newspapers even reported that it is just the same papers used in the new designs. | |

| Ok, I found the year mintage on the new money bill and also on the old ones, it is just not too noticeable because it is in small print. The Filipino group involved in the design of the new money bills answered the criticism thrown out in various media. They reasoned out that new money bills follows certain color assignments, thus, color hues must conform with the color motif of the money bills (so the color yellow do not appear on the P20 because of the orange motif, etc..) and they cited other countries with the same issuance of new money bills with criticism from their own countrymen.. Other reasons for the other complaints were acceptable enough depending on your sense of what is doable or not. | |

| I don't want to sound like a "know all" but these notes cannot be classed as "polymer", as they were not printed in Australia. Securency/Note Printing Australia print all the worlds polymer banknotes. The BSP has just bought more banknote printing equipment so I don't think the Philippines will be seeing Polymer notes for many, many years. | |

| I am not an authority on polymer banknotes, and I cannot comment on whether Securency is still either (1) the sole manufacturer, or (2) the sole process patent holder for polymer notes. However, here is an interesting article on the topic:
http://www.polymernotes.org/other_country/AUS_experience.pdf
Incidentally, Securency itself has recently announced that it is being sold to new owners.
