PH seeks to set Guinness record for longest line of coins By Cathy Rose A. Garcia, abs-cbnNEWS.com Posted at 11/21/2011 6:16 PM | Updated as of 11/22/2011 11:17 AM MANILA, Philippines - Filipinos will try to set a new Guinness world record for the longest line of single-denominated coins at the Quirino Grandstand, Manila on November 30.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Officers Club and Employees Association and its private sector partner Kabayanihan Foundation are spearheading the project "Barya ng mga Bayani: The Power of Small Change".
Organizers are aiming to line up at least 5 million pieces of 25 centavo coins, which is estimated to measure up to 70 kilometers, at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta Park, Manila on November 30 (a non-working holiday).
The current world record is held by a community in Fort Scott, Kansas, US, where they lined up 3.4 million pieces of 1 cent coins for a total of 64.88 kilometers in 2008.
Filipinos are urged to empty their piggy banks and donate 25 centavo coins and other coin denominations to the the BSP and its branches nationwide. They are also invited to bring 25 centavo coins on the day of the event and to volunteer to line up the coins.
One can also choose to volunteer to sponsor one of the kilometers for only P12,500.
Aside from breaking the world record for the longest line of coins, organizers are hoping to "unify Filipinos to unleash the power of small change and the power of unity through small acts starting at collecting and donating coins for nation-building."
The project is for a good cause, since the total collected amount of coins will go to funding the construction of classrooms for public elementary schools around the country.
The BSP Officers Club has already started collecting coins from the BSP employees, already generating some 50 kilometers worth of 25 centavos valued at P625,000

| PH breaks the “longest line of coins” world record Posted by PinoyNumNet ⋅ December 3, 2011 ⋅ Leave a Comment Filed Under Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, bsp, Coin, event, Guinness World Record, Philippines
Once again the Filipino prove the value of “bayanihan spirit” by setting a new world record for the longest line of single-denominated coins. November 30, 2011 to December 01, 2011, the Quirino Grandstand grounds was filled by close to 8,000 volunteers from different schools and private civic groups and finished creating a 73.02-kilometer line of 25 centavo coins. 8.14 kilometers lead over the record of 64.88 km of pennies held by US since June 2008. The coins were donated by local government units, schools, media, and the public.
Compared with the previous record, finishing in 6 hours time, the laying down of coins was supposed to be completed earlier but was extended due to sudden downpours as well as a temporary shortage of scotch tape which cased delays. But organizers and volunteers valiantly continued their effort, until late in the evening.
Geodetic engineers confirmed the measurements and inspected the line of coins to see if it complied with the standards of the Guinness World Record, since there were no official person from Guinness. Other independent auditors will sign a certification, which will be submitted, along with other documents, to the Guinness World Records for “official” confirmation of the new world record.
According to the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the event was part of the BSP’s effort to encourage the re-circulation of coins back into the system, amid the country’s coin shortage. Coins used in the event will later then be put into circulation the the proceeds of the donations will be used in building of classrooms around the Philippines.
